THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW
10:1 And when He
had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over
unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of
sickness and all kinds of disease. 2 Now the names of the twelve
apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and
Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his
brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax
collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose
surname was[a] Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Cananite,[b] and Judas
Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.
[a] NU-Text omits Lebbaeus, whose surname was.
[b] NU-Text reads Cananaean.
THE GOSPEL OF MARK
3:13 And He went up on the mountain
and called to Him those He Himself wanted. And they came to Him.
14 Then He appointed twelve,[b] that they might be with Him and
that He might send them out to preach, 15 and to have power to
heal sicknesses and[c] to cast out demons: 16 Simon,[d] to whom
He gave the name Peter; 17 James the son of Zebedee and John the
brother of James, to whom He gave the name Boanerges, that is,
“Sons of Thunder”; 18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew,
Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the
Cananite; 19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him. And they
went into a house.
[b] NU-Text adds whom He also named apostles.
[c] NU-Text omits to heal sicknesses and.
[d] NU-Text reads and He appointed the twelve: Simon . . . .
THE GOSPEL OF LUKE
6:12 Now it came to pass in those
days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all
night in prayer to God. 13 And when it was day, He called His
disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also
named apostles: 14 Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew
his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; 15 Matthew
and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the
Zealot; 16 Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot who also
became a traitor.
ACTS OF THE APOSTLES
1:12 Then they returned to Jerusalem
from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath
day’s journey. 13 And when they had entered, they went up into
the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and
Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the
son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of
James. 14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and
supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and
with His brothers.

Simon, whom He also named Peter, and
Andrew his brother
Matthew 18:1 And
Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon
called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the
sea; for they were fishermen. 19 Then He said to them, “Follow
Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 They immediately
left their nets and followed Him.
|
Mark 1:16 And as He walked by the Sea
of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net
into the sea; for they were fishermen. 17 Then Jesus said to
them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18
They immediately left their nets and followed Him.
Luke 5:1 So it was, as the multitude pressed about
Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of
Gennesaret, 2 and saw two boats standing by the lake; but
the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their
nets. 3 Then He got into one of the boats, which was
Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land.
And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. 4
When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out
into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 But
Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all
night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will
let down the net.” 6 And when they had done this, they
caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. 7
So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come
and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so
that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell
down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a
sinful man, O Lord!”
Mark 1:29 Now as soon as they had come out of the synagogue,
they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and
John. 30 But Simon’s wife’s mother lay sick with a fever,
and they told Him about her at once. 31 So He came and took
her by the hand and lifted her up, and immediately the fever
left her. And she served them. Many Healed After Sabbath
Sunset 32 At evening, when the sun had set, they brought to
Him all who were sick and those who were demon-possessed. 33
And the whole city was gathered together at the door. 34
Then He healed many who were sick with various diseases, and
cast out many demons; and He did not allow the demons to
speak, because they knew Him.
John 1:35 Again, the next day, John stood with two of his
disciples. 36 And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said,
“Behold the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him
speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 Then Jesus turned, and
seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?”
They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated,
Teacher), “where are You staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come
and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and
remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth
hour). 40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed
Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found
his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the
Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ). 42 And he
brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said,
“You are Simon the son of Jonah.[i] You shall be called
Cephas” (which is translated, A Stone).
[i] NU-Text reads John.
Matthew 16:13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea
Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say
that I, the Son of Man, am?” 14 So they said, “Some say John
the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the
prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I
am?” 16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ,
the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus answered and said to
him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood
has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in
heaven. 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on
this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades
shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give you the
keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on
earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on
earth will be loosed[d] in heaven.” 20 Then He commanded His
disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the
Christ.
[d] Or will have
been bound . . . will have been loosed.

The Sons of Thunder

Mark 1:19 When He had gone a little
farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John
his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets. 20
And immediately He called them, and they left their father
Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him.
Mark 3:17 James the son of Zebedee
and John the brother of James, to whom He gave the name
Boanerges, that is, “Sons of Thunder”.
Matthew 20:20 Then the mother of
Zebedee’s sons came to Him with her sons, kneeling down and
asking something from Him. 21 And He said to her, “What do you
wish?” She said to Him, “Grant that these two sons of mine may
sit, one on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your
kingdom.” 22 But Jesus answered and said, “You do not know what
you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink,
and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?”[d]
They said to Him, “We are able.” 23 So He said to them, “You
will indeed drink My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that
I am baptized with;[e] but to sit on My right hand and on My
left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is
prepared by My Father.”

with.

Jesus' Inner Circle
Peter, Andrew, James, and John
|
John
21:15
Peter was greater than the rest on account of the
excellence of the love which he had for the Savior: Jesus saith to Simon Peter:
Simon son of John, lovest thou me more than these? He saith to him: Yea, Lord,
thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him: Feed my lambs.
Mark 9:2 Six days after this, Jesus
took with Him Peter and James and John and led them up on a high
mountain apart by themselves. And He was transfigured before them
and became
resplendent with divine brightness.
Mark 13:3
And as He
sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and
John and Andrew asked Him privately,4
Tell us when is this to take
place and what will be the sign when these things, all [of them],
are about to be accomplished? 5
And Jesus
began to tell them, Be careful and
watchful that no one misleads you [about it].
6
Many will
come in
the name which belongs to
Me,
I am! And they will mislead many. 7
And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; it
is necessary [that these things]
take place, but the end is not yet here.
Mark 14:33 31 But [Peter] said more vehemently and repeatedly,
[Even] if it should be necessary for me to die with You, I will not
deny or disown You! And they all kept saying the same thing. 32 Then
they went to a place called Gethsemane, and He said to His
disciples, Sit down here while I pray. 33 And He took with Him Peter
and James and John, and began to be [d]struck
with terror and amazement and deeply troubled and depressed. 34 And
He said to them, My soul is exceedingly sad so that it almost kills
Me! Remain here and keep awake and be watching. 35 And going a
little farther, He fell on the ground and kept praying that if it
were possible the hour might pass from Him. 36 And He was saying,
Abba, [which means] Papa, everything is possible for You. Take away
this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You [will]. 37 And
He came back and found them sleeping, and He said to Peter, Simon,
are you asleep? Have you not the strength to keep awake and watch
one hour? 38 Keep awake and watch and pray, that you may not enter
into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is
weak. 39 He went away again and prayed, saying the same words. 40
And again He came back and found them sleeping, for their eyes were
very heavy; and they did not know what answer to give Him. 41 And He
came back a third time and said to them, Are you still sleeping and
resting? It is enough [of that]! The hour has come. The Son of Man
is betrayed into the hands of sinful men. 42 Get up, let us be
going! See, My betrayer is at hand.

John 1:43 The following day Jesus wanted to go
to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.” 44
Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45
Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of
whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of
Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 And Nathanael said to him, “Can
anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come
and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of
him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!” 48
Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and
said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the
fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered and said to Him,
“Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50
Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw
you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater
things than these.” 51 And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I
say to you, hereafter[j] you
shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and
descending upon the Son of Man.”
John 12:20 Now there were certain Greeks among
those who came up to worship at the feast. 21 Then they came to
Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him,
saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip came and told
Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus.

Thomas the Twin

John 11:14 Then Jesus said to them plainly,
“Lazarus is dead. 15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not
there, that you may believe. Nevertheless let us go to him.” 16
Then Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow
disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him.”
John 20:19 Then, the same day at evening,
being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where
the disciples were assembled,[c] for fear of the Jews, Jesus
came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with
you.” 20 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His
side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 So
Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent
Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed
on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you
forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain
the sins of any, they are retained.” 24 Now Thomas, called the
Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25
The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the
Lord.” So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print
of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and
put my hand into His side, I will not believe.” 26 And after
eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with
them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst,
and said, “Peace to you!” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your
finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and
put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.” 28
And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” 29
Jesus said to him, “Thomas,[d] because you have seen Me, you
have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have
believed.”

Matthew 9:9 As Jesus passed on from there, He
saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said
to him, “Follow Me.” So he arose and followed Him. 10 Now it
happened, as Jesus sat at the table in the house, that behold,
many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Him and
His disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to
His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors
and sinners?” 12 When Jesus heard that, He said to them, “Those
who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are
sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and
not sacrifice.’[b] For I did not come to call the righteous, but
sinners, to repentance.”[c]
[b] Hosea 6:6
[c] NU-Text omits to repentance.
Mark 2:13 Then He went out again by the sea; and all the
multitude came to Him, and He taught them. 14 As He passed

office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” So he arose and
followed Him. 15 Now it happened, as He was dining in Levi’s
house, that many tax collectors and sinners also sat
together with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many,
and they followed Him. 16 And when the scribes and[b]
Pharisees saw Him eating with the tax collectors and
sinners, they said to His disciples, “How is it that He eats
and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 When Jesus
heard it, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need

he had been lying on, and departed to his own house,
glorifying God. 26 And they were all amazed, and they
glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, “We have
seen strange things today!” 27 After these things He
went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the
tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” 28 So he left
all, rose up, and followed Him. 29 Then Levi gave Him a
great feast in his own house. And there were a great number

their scribes and the Pharisees[b]
complained against His disciples, saying, “Why do You eat

answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need

Judas Iscariot
|
Luke 22:1 Now the Feast of Unleavened
Bread drew near, which is called Passover. 2 And the chief
priests and the scribes sought how they might kill Him, for they
feared the people. 3 Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed
Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve. 4 So he went his
way and conferred with the chief priests and captains, how he
might betray Him to them. 5 And they were glad, and agreed to
give him money. 6 So he promised and sought opportunity to
betray Him to them in the absence of the multitude.
John 12:3 Then Mary took a pound of
very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and
wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the
fragrance of the oil. 4 But one of His disciples, Judas
Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said, 5 “Why was
this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given
to the poor?” 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor,
but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used
to take what was put in it.
John 13:21 When Jesus had said these
things, He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Most
assuredly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me.” 22 Then the
disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke.
23 Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples,
whom Jesus loved. 24 Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to
ask who it was of whom He spoke. 25 Then, leaning back[d]
on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus
answered, “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I
have dipped it.” And having dipped the bread, He gave it to
Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27 Now after the piece of
bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do,
do quickly.” 28 But no one at the table knew for what reason He
said this to him. 29 For some thought, because Judas had the
money box, that Jesus had said to him, “Buy those things we need
for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. 30
Having received the piece of bread, he then went out
immediately. And it was night.

Acts 26:4 “My manner of life from my youth,
which was spent from the beginning among my own nation at
Jerusalem, all the Jews know. 5 They knew me from the first, if
they were willing to testify, that according to the strictest
sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee. 6 And now I stand and
am judged for the hope of the promise made by God to our
fathers. 7 To this promise our twelve tribes, earnestly serving
God night and day, hope to attain. For this hope’s sake, King
Agrippa, I am accused by the Jews. 8 Why should it be thought
incredible by you that God raises the dead? 9 “Indeed, I myself
thought I must do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of
Nazareth. 10 This I also did in Jerusalem, and many of the
saints I shut up in prison, having received authority from the
chief priests; and when they were put to death, I cast my vote
against them. 11 And I punished them often in every synagogue
and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly enraged
against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities. 12
“While thus occupied, as I journeyed to Damascus with authority
and commission from the chief priests, 13 at midday, O king,
along the road I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun,
shining around me and those who journeyed with me. 14 And when
we all had fallen to the ground, I heard a voice speaking to me
and saying in the Hebrew language, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you
persecuting Me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’
15 So I said, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said, ‘I am Jesus,
whom you are persecuting. 16 But rise and stand on your feet;
for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a
minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen
and of the things which I will yet reveal to you. 17 I will
deliver you from the Jewish people, as well as from the
Gentiles, to whom I now[a] send you, 18 to open their eyes, in
order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of
Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an
inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’ 19
“Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly
vision, 20 but declared first to those in Damascus and in
Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to
the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works
befitting repentance.

Mattias
Replacement for Judas

Acts 1:15 And in those days Peter
stood up in the midst of the disciples[c]
(altogether the number of names was about a hundred and twenty),
and said, 16 “Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be
fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of
David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested
Jesus; 17 for he was numbered with us and obtained a part in
this ministry.” 18 (Now this man purchased a field with the
wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the
middle and all his entrails gushed out. 19 And it became known
to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in
their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 “For
it is written in the Book of Psalms: ‘Let his dwelling place be
desolate, And let no one live in it’;[d] and, ‘Let[e] another
take his office.’[f] 21 “Therefore, of these men who have
accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out
among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John to that day when
He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with
us of His resurrection.” 23 And they proposed two: Joseph called
Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they
prayed and said, “You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show
which of these two You have chosen 25 to take part in this
ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell,
that he might go to his own place.” 26 And they cast their lots,
and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the
eleven apostles.
